The 20th IPITA (International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association) World Congress was held in Pisa from 15 to 18 June 2025.

The congress brought together experts from around the world to explore and discuss the latest breakthroughs in pancreas and islet transplantation, beta-cell replacement therapies and innovative approaches that are shaping the future of diabetes treatment. The programme, packed with cutting-edge topics, also included numerous opportunities for discussion and debate to offer new perspectives on the evolving field of diabetes care.

Three important social events took place during the congress, allowing participants to get to know some of Pisa’s sights and traditions.

The opening ceremony took place on the evening of 15 June at the Verdi Theatre with the presence of national and international guests and a performance by the Pisa orchestra.

On 16 June, a dinner was held in the inner garden of “Palazzo Fiumi e Fossi”, a green space, a few steps from the banks of the Arno river, offering a privileged view. An ideal location to watch the famous Luminara di San Ranieri, which is held every year in Pisa to celebrate the patron saint and transforms the city into an enchanting light show, with thousands of candles adorning the buildings along the Arno.

On 17 June, a gala dinner was held in the Cortile degli Spedalinghi, one of the courtyards of the former Santa Chiara Hospital. Originally used by the hospital administrators (Spedalinghi), the courtyard features elegant porticoes and classical architecture typical of the Renaissance period. From this hidden corner steeped in history, a perspective view of the Leaning Tower, rising just beyond the rooftops, creates a magical visual link between the hospital built in 1257 to assist pilgrims and the Pisan symbol located nearby.
